Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints. It can also cause inflammation of the tissue around the joints, as well as other organs in the body. The actual cause of this condition is still unknown. It usually affects the big joints of the body. Wrist, knee and hip joints are frequently affected. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs mostly in the middle age ranging between 30-60 years. Women are more susceptible to the disease than men

Symptoms:

  • Swelling, tenderness and inflammation of joints.
  • Fatigue
  • Systemic symptoms like fever, headache.
  • Pain in the affected joint.
  • Gradual loss of movement in the affected joint.
  • Joint deformity
  • Pain in the chest while drawing breath (when lungs are affected)
  • Visual disturbances, with burning, itching and watering of eyes.
  • Hard mass or nodules under the skin
  • Altered sensation on the skin.

In some patients with rheumatoid arthritis, chronic inflammation leads to the destruction of the cartilage, bone, and ligaments, causing deformity of the joints.


DIAGNOSIS

There is no test that can determine for sure whether you have RA. Most patients with RA will have some abnormal test results, although for some patients, all tests will be normal. Two lab tests that often help in the diagnosis are: Rheumatoid factor test Anti-CCP antibody test Other tests that may be done include: Complete blood count C-reactive protein Erythrocyte sedimentation rate Joint ultrasound or MRI Joint x-rays Synovial fluid analysis
